Old Praga, Warsaw

Poland is an interesting place to recycle architecture at the moment. A lot of the country is under renovation and forgotten and neglected areas are getting a new life.

In the Second World War much of Warsaw was destroyed during the Nazi occupation. The distict of Praga, however, survived pretty much in tact although it went into decline during the communist period. This area now has, through renovation, got fantastic architectural potential of becoming one of the most beautiful areas of Warsaw.

In Old Praga old properties are being renovated and converted into apartments, boutiques, galleries, trendy bars, cafes and workshops. This up and coming district in Warsaw, the city, according to The Guardian of February 6th 2007 with the most buoyant property market in Europe has been likened by Sarah Turner in The Observer newspaper of November 12 to the booming Shoreditch area of London. "The Warsaw distict of Praga emerges to fill its edgy, arty-clubbing converse shoes with a culturally diverse smorgasbord of factories turned art galleries turned clubbing spaces liberally sprinkled with post post modern irony" (The Observer November 12 th 2006).
